Since the discontinuation of iDVD, many Mac users have been looking for a new DVD Burning alternative for OSX. Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate is one possible contender for the role so let’s take a look.
Wondershare has three main features, converting, burning DVDs and downloading videos. The software is priced at $69.
The layout is really simple which makes using it a breeze. At the top are buttons to choose between the main options. When converting is selected there are multiple choices for what file type you can convert to.

There are a large number (158) of formats you can choose from including MP4, MKV, AVI, WMV, etc. If you are unsure which file is suitable, you can choose a device you want to use it with such as an iPod, Android phone or Playstation 3.
Everything about the conversion part of the application works extremely well. Anything I tested for conversion worked without a single problem, the conversion was quick and came out the other end still looking good.
The download option lets you browse for videos on Youtube or other video hosting website and download the videos straight to your Mac. Unfortunately this seemed a little picky when I tried it. It tended to work the first time but not the second. Exiting and coming back to it solved the problem but it was a nuisance.
Burning to DVD
The DVD burning part of the application is very easy to use. To test it out I put together a short video in iMovie and exported to my Movie folder. I uploaded the video to Wondershare and all seemed to be in working order.
To see how the application copes with different formats I threw in a few different videos, all a different format (M4V, MP4, MOV and MPG). The preview coped well with all of them without any difficulties.
There are also options to export as .dvdmedia or an ISO as well as where to send it to. This could be useful if you wished to test a DVD before committing to burning it.
At the bottom are some options for DVD menu options, which is a nice touch for personal use but might be a bit cheesy for some. However I do like the fact that the menu adjusts itself depending on the number of individual videos you’re putting in there. When you’re ready you can then preview how the DVD will play before you burn it.
It would have been good to see a bit more customization when creating DVDs. There are a few editing options for the videos such as selecting a portion of the video for use, adding a watermark and adding subtitles (if you have a subtitles file ready for use).
There are some effects which, like the menus, range from the okay to the too gaudy to use.
It would have been nice to choose where you go to once a video has reached the end (like back to the main menu). But as it stands, the videos all run in to each other, acting like chapters rather than individual videos. Which, depending on what you want to do with it, might not be a problem or might be the reason you look for more dedicated software.
Unfortunately, neither Wondershare Converter nor DVD Creator burn to Blu-Ray. So if you’ve made the move to a HD camera and Blu-Ray player, then you’ll be missing out.
If you’re looking for a straightforward video converter, you’ll struggle to find better. Wondershare is so simple to use that you’ll be converting files in seconds. It worked perfectly with the file I had previously exported from iMovie and all of the converted files were imported to Final Cut without any issues.
The downloading feature is a nice addition and one that could be extremely useful. It’s just a shame that it had some glitches.
The DVD burning is just as easy as the file converter, if a little lacking in features. If you’re just after something basic then this’ll do the trick. But if you want something primarily for burning DVDs, you’re better off with something more dedicated to the task.
Simply the best DVD Burning & Video Converting software for OSX
Other than Roxio Toast, there are not many options when it comes to burning DVDs on a Mac. We find that Wondershare has the edge in this department due to the more useful features.
